Why are woofer drivers easily burned out ? |
If used improperly, it is easy to cause the woofer driver to be burned out. Once the power amplifier is distorted, the output distorted signal will rapidly increase the temperature of the voice coil inside the speaker, and it is necessary to reduce the input signal of the power amplifier in time. But it is impossible for us to keep an eye on the working status of the amplifier, so we need the assistance of a processor audio device with a limiter function.
The woofer is an important speaker unit in the speaker. Its frequency is low, which makes the sound from the speaker feel powerful and surging, and the ear can resonate and shock.

Although the probability of the woofer being burned out is much lower than that of the tweeter, it can still easily cause the woofer to be burned out if it is not used properly. The most common reason is that the signal input to the power amplifier is too large. Many friends feel that the sound of the speaker is too low, and they can't wait to turn the volume fader or gain knob of the mixer to the maximum.
If the input signal to the power amplifier is too large, it will cause the power amplifier to enter the clip distortion state (Clip), also called overload distortion.
Once the power amplifier is distorted, the output distorted signal will quickly cause the temperature of the voice coil inside the speaker to rise. If the input signal of the power amplifier is not lowered in time, the speaker voice coil will be burned due to high temperature. When the power amplifier is distorted, the greater the power of the connected speaker, the faster the temperature of the voice coil rises, and the higher the temperature. Because the power of the tweeter in the speaker is much lower than that of the woofer, the voice coil heats up slowly when the power amplifier is distorted, and the temperature is not high, so it is not easy to burn the tweeter, mainly the woofer.
So how to prevent amplifier distortion? |
To prevent the power amplifier from being distorted, you must first understand the working status of the power amplifier. The signal indicator on the power amplifier panel not only indicates the strength of the input signal, but also indicates the current working status of the power amplifier. The green light indicates that the signal and power amplifier are in normal state, and you don't need to pay attention. The bright yellow light indicates that the signal is large, and the output of the power amplifier has reached 50%~80%, so you need to pay attention to control the signal. When the red light flashes, it means that the signal is very large, the output of the power amplifier has reached 100%, and the signal cannot be increased. If the red light is always on, it means that the power amplifier has been overloaded and distorted, and it will burn out the woofer in the speaker if it continues for dozens of seconds. What we need to do at this time is to observe the power amplifier input signal indicator at any time. If the red light of the power amplifier is found to be on, we must immediately lower the volume fader of the mixer to prevent the power amplifier from being distorted due to excessive signal.
However, in actual use, the position of the power amplifier is usually out of sight of the operator, and it is impossible to stare at the indicator light at any time. If a compressor is used before the power amplifier, it can automatically limit the signal strength to the power amplifier, thereby preventing the power amplifier from being distorted. Compressor is the abbreviation of Compressor and Limiter. It has two main functions: compressor and limiter. The compressor is used to adjust the sound of musical instruments, and the limiter is used for system protection and acts as a safety valve. At present, the independent analog compressor products on the market have basically been eliminated, and the compressor mainly exists as a function in digital audio equipment. If a digital audio processor is added between the speaker and the power amplifier, by setting the protection state of the compressor in the processor, it can prevent the woofer from being burned out due to the distortion of the power amplifier caused by the excessive input signal.
